Top row: Gen. Bragg CSA (ctr) & Gen. Thomas USA (rt.), the "Rock of Chickamauga."
Railroad bridges were vital supply lines but vulnerable to quick destruction, thus the Wisconsin
10th spent a good portion of their first year in-service guarding bridges, Sergeants Makinson
(w/cap) and Nelson (lower rt), successfully defended the Paint Rock Bridge in Alabama with
only two dozen men against a force roughly 10 times their size. Captain Twogood commanded
Company D at Perryville and Stone River, but was forced out of the service due to ill health
following the latter engagement. Artillery along the ridge line chopped up Bragg's men and
saved the day at Stone River. Capt. Collins (lower lt) took his place and was captured at Chickamauga.
