Bibliography:

In writing When Philosophers Were Kings, the following sources were laid side by side in an effort to project our family’s story with accuracy, while still trying to provide the key elements of story. No such listing is required of a novelist, but through this endeavor I have discovered a multitude of people on similar quests. Thus, it seems better to present this bibliography in total, with the hope that it may aid some others in regaining key parts of their own lost family heritage. The one document I cannot account for is the only primary source still missing here. This was a personal account of a Wisconsin man who went to Kansas to fight for the Second Kansas Cavalry at the outbreak of the war. His description of the Battles of Perryville, Indian Territory, and Devil’s Backbone allowed me the graphic depiction presented in When Philosophers Were Kings. Alas, this material was lost in my move from Wisconsin to Georgia, and my memory refuses to produce the source. If you know of the personal account I refer to (please check against references below), I would appreciate you e-mailing me with that information at: smbest@netzero.com.

Sincerely,

Steven M. Best
